FAQ

Quality Solar Central answers all your queries.

A Powerwall system consists of at least one Powerwall battery and a Backup Gateway. The Backup Gateway provides energy management, metering and monitoring functions for Powerwall. It controls connection to the grid, safely disconnecting your home and starting backup operation during an outage. The Backup Gateway also includes communication functions for up to 10 Powerwall units, and receives over-the-air updates for the system.

Powerwall is a rechargeable home battery system that stores energy from solar or from the grid and makes it available on demand. It can power your home during the night, or back up your home in the event of a power outage. With its built-in battery inverter, Powerwall is compact and easy to integrate into your home. As with all Tesla products, new features will be added to Powerwall with over-the-air updates.

Components that make up a Powerwall System

A Powerwall installation includes at least one Powerwall battery, a Backup Gateway and standard electrical hardware such as circuit breaker panels, conduit, junction boxes, or electrical disconnects as required by your particular installation and local electrical codes. In some cases, conduit and other electrical hardware can be hidden within the wall for an additional cost.

Designing for Whole Home Backup

When designing your system, Tesla will recommend the number of Powerwall units needed to back up your entire home (whole home backup). This means that during a power outage, your Powerwall system would be able to support all your appliances. You can then add more Powerwall units to keep your house operational during longer outages.

If you order multiple Powerwalls for your system, they can be mounted as single side-by-side units on a wall or on the floor, or stacked front-to-back (up to 3 deep per stack) and mounted on the floor only.

Side-by-Side Mounting

When mounted side-by-side on a wall, Powerwall units must have enough clearance on each side for electrical connections and proper ventilation.

Front-to-Back Mounting

When stacked front-to-back, Powerwall must be floor-mounted and the stack must be anchored to an adjacent wall, and the Powerwall units must be joined together with Powerwall Stack Kit hardware.

Powerwall & Solar

Adding energy storage to your solar system is the best way to maximise your system’s value – allowing you to use solar power day and night. Powerwall can be integrated with a new or existing solar system.

To ensure reliable operation during power outages, at least one Powerwall is required for each 7.6 kW AC of solar included in the backup circuit.

Powerwall & the Grid

When Powerwall is installed without solar, it can charge from the grid to support Backup-only Mode.

When Powerwall is installed with solar, it will not be able to charge from the grid. Powerwall installations must also comply with rules around grid charging.

Though Powerwall can operate during when the grid is down, Powerwall must still be connected to the grid.

Powerwall does not currently offer an off-grid solution, but you can reserve a Powerwall and we will contact you once an off-grid solution is available in your area.

Powerwall & Generators

Powerwall can be added to an existing system that has solar panels and a backup generator connected with an external Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) or Manual Transfer Switch (MTS). Powerwall is installed between the electrical service entrance and the transfer switch, where it charges from solar while the grid is operational. However, the Powerwall and generator are not directly integrated which means Powerwall does not charge from the generator.

In an outage, Powerwall responds immediately and provides backup power before the generator can detect the outage. The generator is turned on only when the Powerwall state of charge drops below a set threshold, or if loads exceed Powerwall’s maximum output. When grid power returns, the generator will turn off and Powerwall can again charge from solar. If Powerwall is installed with an MTS, manual operation of the switch is required to power the home with the generator.

Powerwall & Other Batteries

Powerwall does not currently work with existing battery systems.

Powerwall & Other Renewables

Powerwall does not currently integrate with other renewable energy sources, such as wind or hydro.

Powerwall & EV Charging

Powerwall can provide stored solar energy to your EV through your home electrical panel. However, there is no direct connection between Powerwall and the EV wall connector.

The Tesla Powerwall 2 is a powerful lithium ion battery to power your essential appliances during an outage, allow you to use stored energy during peak times, or, allow your home to run off solar power when it’s not sunny out.

Before options like this, you’d have to rely on large, expensive, and space hoarding battery banks, or extra energy from the sun would be wasted, or sent back through the grid if that was an option in your area.

Following the launch of Tesla Powerwall in 2016, Quality Solar Sydney is pleased to offer you the latest in Powerwall technology, with the release of the Tesla Powerwall 2, with greater storage capacity to save any excess energy your solar system generates – so you can use it later.

Our experience with solar energy combined with Tesla’s latest Powerwall, means you’ll always be able to optimise and make the most of your solar power.

Tesla Powerwall 2 – what is it and what’s the latest

The Tesla Powerwall 2 is a powerful lithium ion battery to power your essential appliances during an outage, allow you to use stored energy during peak times, or, allow your home to run off solar power when it’s not sunny out.

Before options like this, you’d have to rely on large, expensive, and space hoarding battery banks, or extra energy from the sun would be wasted, or sent back through the grid if that was an option in your area.

How do solar systems work with the Tesla Powerwall 2?

Photons (sun light) are absorbed by solar panels in a rooftop installation. DC electricity is then created from the solar panels. DC cannot be used in the home, and thus has to be converted to AC electricity with an inverter. The energy that is created is either used to power your house, fed back into the grid (if applicable) or stored using your Tesla Powerwall. You can manage all of this using a cloud-based app.

Tesla’s Powerwall 2 offers one of the best ratios for energy storage. One Powerwall 2 stores 13.5 kWh, basically enough to run your main appliances for a full 24 hours. It also comes with the inverter mentioned above. The Powerwall 2 comes with a 10 year warranty.
